About Us
Isle of Man Film, formerly known as the Isle of Man Film Commission was first set up in 1995 as part of the Isle of Man Government's economic diversification policy. Over recent years, the Isle of Man has become one of the busiest areas of film production in the British Isles. Isle of Man Film (wholly owned by the Isle of Man Government) acts as an equity investor in film and television in co-operation with our legal team at Cains and our media consultants, Gasworks Media.
Our aim is to raise the profile of the Island's film industry and to actively market the Isle of Man as a film location at major film industry events. Employment of Manx film workers and the use of ancillary Manx services is a vital factor in our consideration of applications.
In addition to the discretionary financial support offered, we act as a facilitator in assisting with the logistics of production on the Island. We have amassed a wealth of practical media experience and can assist with organising film crew accomodation, production supplies, crew and facilities and locations. This includes the use of the Island's state of the art purpose built film studio in the north of the Island.
The Advantages of Filming on the Island
Varied Scenery
'The Isle of Man can easily double up for most UK and Irish Countries' says producer Marc Samuelson, who shot The Gathering, and Things to do Before You're 30 on the Island. 'It is particularly good at resembling the Home Counties, Cornwall, Ireland and the Yorkshire Moors.'
Hassle-free filming
Lawless Heart producer Martin Pope, says it is easy to shoot on the Island as the locals are very open to film shoots, 'whereas in London everyone would rather you went away.'
Good Support
There are plenty of support crew on hand, including drivers, caterers, runners etc.
Cost Effective
As the Island is a popular holiday destination, there are plenty of affordable hotels.
Distance
Everything is so close. 'You're never very far from where you are staying and you don't get long journeys to locations taking up lots of time and effort' says Lawless Heart co-director Neil Hunter.
Architecture galore
The Isle of Man has architecture ranging from Medieval castles and towns to fishing villages, stately homes, untouched villages, thatched villages, Edwardian and Victorian houses, and newly built business parks and offices.
In addition to this is the Media Development Fund - a fund which offers financial incentives to producers and film makers to film on the Island, subject to certain criteria.
